- UK Defence Secretary Shapps has unveiled plans to escalate Britain’s military presence in Ukraine. This decision, made after discussions with Gen Sir Patrick Sanders and other high-ranking officials, could potentially pull NATO into a direct confrontation with Russia.
Shapps voiced his plan to shift training and production “in country”, urging British firms to follow the footsteps of BAE, a leading UK defence company. This move towards domestic manufacturing and training is viewed as a golden opportunity for western Ukraine.
In his recent meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv, Shapps proposed that stationing British troops within Ukraine could reduce dependence on British and other NATO bases for training Ukrainian soldiers. The Ministry of Defence states that more than 20,000 members of the Armed Forces of Ukraine have been trained by UK military personnel at British bases since last year.
